Hand painted t-shirts

Last year I stumbled across this blog post about painting your own t-shirts. Of course I bookmarked it and forgot about it until I saw another blog post by the same author this summer! This time no procrastinating we made them!! The kids had an absolute ball painting the t-shirts so much that they did it twice in one week!!

The process is simple enough, though it requires lots of patience during the drying phases.

1. Draw a picture onto an A4 piece of paper or like us trace one from a book!

2. Stick the picture onto the same size piece of baking paper and then onto a piece of cardboard. Doing this will ensure that the paint doesn't bleed onto the other side of the t-shirt and helps make it easier to paint on. Now slide this between the front and the back of the t-shirt

3. Center your picture carefully. Using washable gel glue (the original states Elmers Galaxy Glitter Glue but I have no idea what that is so I used shouji glue!!) trace the outline of your design  onto the t-shirt.

4. Let the glue dry. It may take 24hours or so.

5. Using arcylic or fabric paints paint the design remembering to paint on the 'outside of the lines too'!! It is better to have the paint a little thin, if it is thick the final t-shirt print will be hard. Thin the paints by adding a little water. Becareful using the paint because it doesn't wash out!! Only put it where you want it.

6. Allow to dry completely.

7. Soak the t-shirts in warm water for about 30mins to soften the glue, then scrub the softened glue off using a small scrubbing brush to reveal your design. Wash.

Your very own original t-shirt!

The hardest part of the entire project was finding plain t-shirts in Japan!! Luckily Uniqlo was clearing out stock and I got 2 for 180yen!

You could also do this on bags, pillows or handkerchieves. I'm thinking about making Christmas decorations this way!
