What's this?

Do you know what this is?
We found it while on a little walk last weekend amongst a pine tree, of sorts!!
I must admit that I'd never seen one before but
it isn't found just in Japan.

I'm excited...I brought it home to my husbands dismay!!

  4. I believe it's a praying mantis egg sack. If my kids were awake they could confirm that for me in a heartbeat, but I'll just have to go with my gut. :o)

  5. Is it some kind of fungus? It looks a little like an 'oak apple', but of course on a pine...

  6. It is as Sue says the egg sack of praying mantis!
It's kind of yuck and wow all in one!!
We've put it in an insect box with some greenery, the greenery more so to keep it off the floor of the box so it doesn't drown if it rains. Now we're waiting patiently until spring! We always have lots of praying mantis in our garden but I've never spotted an egg sack before!

    Thanks for having a try!

  7. I do hope you are keeping it outside, or at least well contained.

A friend of mine found one with her kids once. I'm not sure if they didn't know what it was, or if they just didn't think anything would happen with it, since they disturbed it and took it indoors. They left it on a shelf, and one day they hatched out, and they had tiny mantises all over their house! Apparently, it was quite a job to get rid of all of them.
