Back in the saddle after a long break due to morning sickness!
I took my kids to the local swamp to have a look at the migratory birds who've come to enjoy our warm winter...well warmer than where they are from anyway!!!
The swamp is a natural sanctuary, in winter the reeds are dry and brown and the water clearly visible. Thousands of ducks spend their days sunning themselves and munching away on whatever is below the surface.
In summer the reeds are tall and lush. You have to look pretty hard to spot a bird and when you do they'd be pretty tiny ones not ducks. Don't you love my preciseness here!! There are however thousands upon thousands of dragonflies of all different species. The local schools breed endangered varieties to release back into the swamp and undertake different initiatives to rid the swamp of American crayfish which devour the dragonfly eggs.
We walked the entire perimeter of the larger section of water around 3 km up and down hills by passing muddy flats and taking in a variety of viewing points from strategically placed huts.
We were amazed at the number of ducks but disappointed that this is as close as we could get.
I was hoping for a close up but I realised why all the retired men who were out taking shots had meter length lenses!!!
The boys being boys made a heap of noise to get the birds to fly but not one duck flinched!!
I guess they're used to the local boys!!
It's such a peaceful spot right in the middle of a bustling town.
Take a look at the Gallery for some other shots taken on phone cameras,
be inspired!
haha, this post reminded me that for the last 2 weeks or so Leilah has decided all birds are ducks and says, 'quack quack' when she sees one, lol!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like a really pretty place though!
What a calming pic. Wouldn't mind taking a picnic there!

ReplyDeleteThat's just the sort of vista I take snaps of. Lovely sunlight through the trees. Beautiful nature even the 'small not duck' part!
