Our kids are provided with a hot lunch at kindy and school everyday which we pay a small few for. It makes life so much easier for me especially when Miss Sunshine is out the door at 7.10am. Kindy has Friday's designated as bring your own lunch day to encourage the kids to appreciate mum/or whoever prepares the meals hard work. When Miss Sunshine was at kindy it was every Friday but recently there have been less lunch box days. Last year the school lunch centre decided that the three months over summer they would prepare all the meals to reduce the chance of food poisoning. Japanese lunches are filled with sausages, cold meat and egg dishes and sit in the kids bags until lunch time (with no air con) so I thought this was a great idea.
Generally speaking lunch is just riceballs (cold rice with a filling squashed into the middle), a variety of protein and vegetable sides with fruit for 'dessert'. Occasionally the kids will have bread usually in the form of a rolled sandwich (remember pinwheels?). My kids love sandwiches though-big juicy un-Japanese sandwiches! Lunches are 'carefully' chosen, a nice balance of colour, texture, vegetable and protein....or whatever your kid will eat if they're fussy!!
That's all squashed into a lunch box and decorated with fancy toothpicks, coloured patty cases and other things.
Occasionally mums sometimes dads!! will make a character lunch. I made Miss Sunshine one every six weeks or so when she was in kindy but poor Mr Mischief really hasn't had many. On Saturday Miss Sunshine had to go to school as it was the school concert and a regular day for her so she asked for a kani sando (crab sandwich), it's her favourite. What I do for one I do for the others so I was up early this morning to make Mr Mischief's lunch Kamen Rider Forze, the current and quite stupid action hero!

A huge thanks to Gaijin Wife for this design! I don't generally do action heroes or anything where I have to think...I get my ideas from a simple obentou book and only chose the ones I can do quickly!! Gaijin Wife designs her own then shares them with us...talented woman!! and this was EASY.
I'm just worried that this lunch just ended a box full of messed up food :( The secret to a good lunch is it is jammed together so nothing moves and there is little room between the lid and the food. Yesterday hubby bought a new lunch box as the other one broke but it's bigger than usual and if I fill it to the top then he wouldn't be able to eat it all. I wonder what it looked like ???? Oh well I showed him it after I made it so all was not wasted!!
Look here if you want to see some more Japanese boxed lunches. Trust me I keep it simple...some of those lunches are just OVER THE TOP!!
I just picked Mr Mischief up from kindy and his teacher rushed over to tell me that he didn't eat his lunch : ( It apparently still resembled Kamen Rider Forze and he was so excited that he showed all his classmates but he didn't want to eat it, he just wanted to hold it!! Thank goodness he ate everything else though! Gotta love kids xx
